چکیده

The common marine mussel A4yt~lus edulls was used in laboratory-controlled experiments to investigate the effects of exposure to cadmium on immune capability Haemolymph was extracted from mussels exposed for 7 d to 40 and 400 pg 1 ' of cadmium, and assays were carned out to investlgate the potent~al for immune response The assays included total and differential haemocyte counts, the release of lntracellular and extracellular reactive oxygen metabolites, phagocytosis, release of degradatlve enzymes and uptake of neutral red Cadmium at 400 pg 1 ' resulted In sign~ficantly en hanced numbers of circulating haemocytes and increased uptake of neutral red No alteration was demonstrated in proportions of circulat~ng haemocyte types phagocytosls or product~on of reactive oxygen metabolites The release of degradative enzymes during phagocytosis was found to be signiflcantly suppressed at the 40 pg 1 ' cadmium concentration Assays to determine the immune funct~on may provide a sensitive measure of the health status of an individual or population under pollutant stress However the variabihty in effects produced in different aspects of llnmune function emphasises the need for a multi-assay approach to monitonng pollution The observed effects on immunocompetence, at environmentally realistic levels of contaminant, support the vlew that a relat~onship exlsts between pollution and i i~~munomodulation I aqudtic organisms

The impact of ocean acidification, increased seawater temperature and a bacterial challenge on the immune response and physiology of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis

Anthropogenic activities are fundamentally altering the chemistry of the world’s oceans. Many of these modifications could have a significant impact on the health of marine organisms. Yet, despite being proposed as one of the most significant threats that marine ecosystems face, to date very little is known about the impact of anthropogenic climate change, and ocean acidification in particular,...

II. THE USE OF SELECTED BIOMARKERS, PHAGOCYTIC AND CHOLINESTERASE ACTIVITIES, TO DETECT THE EFFECTS OF DIMETHOATE ON MARINE MUSSEL (Mytilus edulis) 2.1.. Abstract Effects of organophosphorous pesticide, dimethoate on blue mussels, Mytilus edulis using selected biomarkers have been studied. Mussels were exposed to serial dilutions of dimethoate, 7.88, 15.75, 31.35 and 63.00 μg/l including positi...

Mercury-binding proteins from the marine mussel, Mytilus edulis.

The marine mussel, Mytilus edulis, possesses low molecular weight, metal-binding proteins which can be induced by and, in turn, bind mercury when individuals are exposed to low, but elevated concentrations of mercury as HgCl2. Induction of the proteins by exposure of mussels to copper, cadmium, or mercury is associated with enhanced tolerance to mercury toxicity. Mercury-binding proteins isolat...

Future Oceanic Warming and Acidification Alter Immune Response and Disease Status in a Commercial Shellfish Species, Mytilus edulis L.

Increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide are leading to physical changes in marine environments including parallel decreases in ocean pH and increases in seawater temperature. This study examined the impacts of a six month exposure to combined decreased pH and increased temperature on the immune response and disease status in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis L. Results provide the first confirmat...

Shotgun analysis of the marine mussel Mytilus edulis hemolymph proteome and mapping the innate immunity elements.

The marine mussel innate immunity provides protection to pathogen invasion and inflammation. In this regard, the mussel hemolymph takes a main role in the animal innate response. Despite the importance of this body fluid in determining the physiological condition of the animal, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying the cellular and humoral responses. In this work, we have ap...
